Powered in its definitive forms by an imported America radial or its Soviet licensed equivalent, the 1-15 was built in large numbers and used operationally in the turbulent years between 1936 and 1942.

The North Korean MiG-15 was one of the first aircraft received by the Western countries after an American offer of substantial reward for any pilot who defected with his machine.

The MiG-23MS "Flogger-E is seen in the markings of the Libyan air force, which has 85 such aircraft. In January 1989 two of them were shot down over the Gulf of Sirte by Grumman F-14 Tomcat fighter from a US Navy aircraft carrier.

An Su-22 "Fitter-J" of the Libyan air force. In 1981 two such Libyan aircraft were destroyed by two US Navy Grumman F-14 Tomcats over the Mediterranean after shaping up for an attack on the American fighters.

This Yak-11, representing a type only rarely seen in the West, was restored by a collector and displayed in France.

Despite its flimsy appearance, the U-2 was a remarkable sturdy and successful type served the USSR with grate distinction

The Su-27 is equivalent to the Mc Donnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, and its a powerfully armed fighter with fly-by-wire control seystem and a "look-down/shoot down" weapon system.

This is one of the last series built Yak-23s, now on display at the Polish army museum in Warsaw.

Particularly good use was made of the Yak-3 by the Normandie-Niemen Regiment, manned by the French pilots but fighting beside Soviet units on the Eastern Front.
