The N.3202 possessed no exceptional commercial or technical features, but was nonetheless a useful primary trainer that served the French army reliably over a period of several years.

The French air force received 35 before the defeat of June 1940 and, apart from three delivered to Finland by the Germans, these were soon scrapped by the occupying forces.

Apart from its civil registration, 220-hp American radial, a tail wheel in place of the original skid and the glider towing hook, this  MS.317 is externally identical with the MS.317 used so successfully and so long by the French air force and navy for the primary training of pilots.

With fully enclosed accommodation, the Proctor Mk IV was for its time a modern communications type that also proved very successful as a radio trainer.

In 1969 the French and West Germans announced a joint requirement for a new aircraft able to undertake the basic/advanced trainer and the light attack and reconnaissance roles. This alpha Jet E is on the strength of the French fighter school based at Tours.
