In the late 20's the Guggenheim Foundation sponsored a design contest for airplanes,
the task being to build the safest possible airplane. From the photos shown only the

 Curtiss Kingbird and the McDonnell Doodlebug were entries in the contest. The 

depression killed the contest, since their was then no market for any personal 

airplanes, here are a few photos of planes that were there.
